Work And Study
Students from Non-EU countries (Third Country Nationals – TCN) can now apply for an employment license and work whilst studying English in Malta!
Third Country Nationals (TCN) students who are studying in Malta for longer than 90 days can apply for an employment licence allowing them to work in Malta.
Conditions
■ Students cannot work in their first 90 days in Malta whilst attending a course
■ They may only apply for an employment licence* after they have obtained a study visa for the period beyond the first 90 day study visa
■ Students need a job offer and to complete the application form together with their employer
■ They must continue to attend their classes – minimum of 15 hours a week
■ Students can only work a maximum of 20 hours per week
■ They cannot stop studying and only work using their employment licence
■ If changing jobs/employer students will need to apply for a new licence* with their new employer
Steps to apply
To study in Malta for longer than 90 days students must extend their visa once in Malta. Visa waiver students should apply for a visa before the end of their visa free 90 days.
1. Students must apply for their study visa first and wait for it to be approved before applying for an employment license*.
2. Find a job in Malta
3. Receive a formal job offer from employer
4. Submit employment application to Jobsplus (the employer will need to complete a form as part of the application with details of the job offer)
5. Pay application fee – €230**
The employment licence takes approximately 4 – 6 weeks to be granted, after which the student can begin working providing they have been studying in Malta for a minimum of 90 days.
Obtaining student visa extension
Students can apply for their visa extension after 21 days in Malta. Students should apply at the Central Visa Unit in Floriana.

Yes, you will need a formal job offer before you can apply as your employer will need to fill in a form as part of your application, stating the job offer and details of the position.

HOW SOON CAN I START WORKING?
You can only work after 90 days in Malta on your study visa and only with a valid extended study visa and employment licence.
HOW MANY HOURS CAN I WORK?
You can only work for a maximum of 20 hours per week and you must continue studying for a minimum of 15 hours per week.
CAN I MISS CLASSES DUE TO WORK?
No, you are required to attend your classes regardless of any employment you may have. If a student’s attendance is less than 75% the school is required to inform immigration which may result in the student’s study visa being withdrawn. This will also make the employment licence invalid.
CAN THE EMPLOYMENT LICENCE BE EXTENDED?
Yes, if the student’s employer is willing to continue to employ them then the licence can be extended*. Students must have a valid study visa and continue to attend their classes.

The General English Course is available at 6 levels all year round: Beginner, Elementary, Pre-Intermediate, Intermediate, Upper Intermediate and Advanced. Students will be placed in the appropriate level according to the results of their placement test and can move on to higher levels according to their progress. Progress tests are held frequently throughout the course to ascertain if a student is ready to move to a higher level.

Intensive General English 30
This is a combination course of General English (as above) and Conversational English (see course details below). This course is designed for students who wish to dedicate more time to develop an increased proficiency in English in a relatively short period of time and the students who wish to maximise their available time to practise the spoken language after the General English course. Students will be placed in the appropriate level of the General English group according to the results of their placement test. The small group (only 6 students per class) Conversational English classes specifically concentrate on speaking, listening and pronunciation and typically involve debates, discussion, pair work (with other students) and presentations. The functional focus is on expressing opinions and preferences, disagreeing and negotiation skills.

IELTS has nowadays become the most important EFL exam for students learning English as a foreign language; whether for career advancement (work purposes) or as an admission prerequisite for a foreign university, the need to sit for an IELTS exam is increasing annually. If you will be applying for a Visa to travel to Malta you are requested to make the deposit or full payment (some Embassies request the proof of full payment) on sending the application form. We will send you your Letter of acceptance as soon as we receive your deposit or full payment (we will specify whether a deposit or full payment is required at enquiry stage). Should you be denied a Visa to travel to Malta we will refund you the full deposit/fees less the bank transfer charges and we will also charge an administration fee of Euro 150. All GSE prices include registration fees, admin fees and taxes however GSE will only charge an admin fee in case of Visa refusal. All information related to the booking of the course & accommodation, including flight details (flight number and time of arrival/departure), is to be received by Gateway School of English (GSE) not later than 2 days prior to arrival.

A weekly fee of € 50 will be added to the course fees and variable additions will be applied to the accommodation fees between these dates.

CANCELLATION & REFUND POLICY OF THE SCHOOL
All cancellations must be made in writing and are subject to the following:
There are no cancellation fees if the cancellation is received earlier than three weeks prior to arrival. When deposits or full fees are paid a credit note will be issued valid for 2 years from the date of issue. The student can use the credit note four courses and/or accommodation with GSE.
In the case of cancellations made less than three weeks prior to arrival there is a cancellation fee of 50% of the tuition and accommodation fees.
