Work And Study

Students from Non-EU countries (Third Country Nationals – TCN) can now apply for an employment license and work whilst studying English in Malta!

Third Country Nationals (TCN) students who are studying in Malta for longer than 90 days can apply for an employment licence allowing them to work in Malta.

Conditions

■ Students cannot work in their first 90 days in Malta whilst attending a course
■ They may only apply for an employment licence* after they have obtained a study visa for the period beyond the first 90 day study visa
■ Students need a job offer and to complete the application form together with their employer
■ They must continue to attend their classes – minimum of 15 hours a week
■ Students can only work a maximum of 20 hours per week
■ They cannot stop studying and only work using their employment licence
■ If changing jobs/employer students will need to apply for a new licence* with their new employer

Steps to apply

To study in Malta for longer than 90 days students must extend their visa once in Malta. Visa waiver students should apply for a visa before the end of their visa free 90 days.
1. Students must apply for their study visa first and wait for it to be approved before applying for an employment license*.
2. Find a job in Malta
3. Receive a formal job offer from employer
4. Submit employment application to Jobsplus (the employer will need to complete a form as part of the application with details of the job offer)
5. Pay application fee – €230**

The employment licence takes approximately 4 – 6 weeks to be granted, after which the student can begin working providing they have been studying in Malta for a minimum of 90 days.

Obtaining student visa extension

Students can apply for their visa extension after 21 days in Malta. Students should apply at the Central Visa Unit in Floriana.

WHO IS CONSIDERED A TCN?
Third country Nationals (TCN) refers to anyone that comes from outside of the EU/EEA or who are not Swiss Nationals.
EDU-SEARCH can advise you regarding helpful websites such as the government Jobsplus website vacancies but students will be responsible for finding their own employment.
Yes, you will need a formal job offer before you can apply as your employer will need to fill in a form as part of your application, stating the job offer and details of the position.
The employment license fee is currently €230. For up-to-date information students should check with Jobsplus: www.jobsplus.gov.mt
You can only work after 90 days in Malta on your study visa and only with a valid extended study visa and employment licence.
You can only work for a maximum of 20 hours per week and you must continue studying for a minimum of 15 hours per week.
No, you are required to attend your classes regardless of any employment you may have. If a student’s attendance is less than 75% the school is required to inform immigration which may result in the student’s study visa being withdrawn. This will also make the employment licence invalid.

Our History
IH Malta was founded in 2001 on the beautiful island of Gozo. In 2005 we launched our summer programmes for YOUNG LEARNERS in Paradise Bay in the north of Malta. Two years later, in 2007, we opened our ADULT SCHOOL in St. Julians, which is also our main centre where the school operates from on a daily basis.At the moment all the three centres are active and offer different types of programmes and classes to help each of our students find the type of classes, leisure and accommodation to fit their needs, interests, and lifestyle.

Combined Intensive English

Students with limited time for studying English may choose to enrol for one session per day of either:
General English or fluency. This course offers you the perfect balance between learning and free time. With only 10 lessons per week, this course provides the most flexibility to fit around your other commitments - whether that's your work, your family, or simply exploring Malta's famous culture.
While all our courses allow for sufficient leisure time to enjoy and explore Malta, you can opt to take our Lite course which offers the further flexibility of having 10 lessons per week (GE10) instead of 20 (GE20), thereby providing you the time to explore Malta and appreciate all the wonders the islands have to offer. Your lessons will be of an hour and a half duration, of either General English or fluency lessons with a total 7.5 hours of lessons per week.

Visa administration fee - No extra cost, this is free!
Each student is responsible for having a valid travel document and visa if required. Malta is within the Schengen area. Letters of Acceptance are issued after full payment is received. Any additional expenses, e.g. courier charges also need to be paid in advance. For the latest information about visa applications, students are advised to refer to the Maltese Embassy or relevant Consulate. The school is not responsible for decisions taken by embassies or immigration authorities regarding entry visas or visa extensions. The minimum requirements for a visa application is 15 hours’ tuition (20 lessons) per week. If the enrolment start date is postponed due to delays in the visa application process, the school may not be able to offer the same original accommodation allocation as originally booked.

A weekly fee of € 75 will be added to the course fees and variable additions will be applied to the accommodation fees between these dates.

The Administration Fee covers all the expenses of the booking process including a welcome pack, a student card, an orientation meeting, a placement test, progress tests throughout the course, course materials, a local SIM card, end-of-course certificate of attendance & e-Learning materials (course book and/or e-book are not included).

NOTES

• Courses start every Monday. • Each lesson consists of 45 minutes. • An intermediate level of English or higher is required to join the Professional English courses. Students wishing to join an Exam Preparation course must have an appropriate level of English relevant to the exam they wish to take. • All fees are in €. • Childcare centre is available on site (subject to availability at a charge).
Leisure or cultural activities may be booked and paid for separately at the school Reception. Unlimited Wi-Fi and use of library material are all free. Rental of DVDs and books incurs a refundable deposit. All classrooms are air-conditioned. There may be some changes to prices that occur due to circumstances beyond our control. In this situation, the most up-to-date prices and Terms & Conditions that appear on our website shall apply.

CANCELLATION & REFUND POLICY OF THE SCHOOL

Cancellation prior to arrival. All cancellations are to be made in writing. Cancellations made: Twenty-nine [29] days prior to arrival: full refund Twenty-eight [28] to fourteen [14] days prior to arrival: 75% refund Less than thirteen [13] days prior to arrival: no refund No-show: no refund
Termination of Course. No refunds will be made once a student has commenced a course.
Cancellation due to visa refusal. In case of visa refusal, a full refund less a €75 Cancellation Fee, applicable bank charges and any additional expenses shall be applied. Particular conditions can be imposed by the school – e.g. no refund on accommodation booked during high season – at the time of application. In all cases, evidence of visa refusal is to be sent to the school.
Refunds. Money can only be returned to the sender.
Some important issues:
1. Cancellations or shortening of courses after Visa has been issued No refunds are granted to students failing to arrive or who are absent during their course.
2. Periods of absence are not compensated with free extensions at the end of the course.
3. In the case of students being granted a visa, non-arrivals, late arrivals and periods of absence will be reported to the immigration authorities.

Host Families Accommodation:
Staying with an English speaking family is an excellent way of maximizing your educational experience. Every family have their own way of life, so living in a family environment can be fun, it gives you the opportunity to practise your English and it will provide you with a cultural experience that you will remember for the rest of your life!
Shared Self-Catering Flats/Apartments:
A flat/apartment is your best option for cost effective, independent accommodation while learning English around your Course location. You have the privacy of your own space and the opportunity to cook your own meals while enjoying the company of other students from different countries. Usually the apartments are centrally located and close to local amenities like cafés, bars, restaurants, shops and buses and all are within walking distance of Course (maximum distance 15 minutes on foot) unless specified otherwise. Electricity and water meter readings will be taken every week and charges will be divided between the number of students sharing the apartment.A Security deposit around 150 Euro is collected in cash on the first day. Water and electricity is not included in the rates quoted.
Hostels (2 Students) Accommodation:
Hostels provide a budget oriented, sociable option where students can book a bed, usually a bunk bed, in a dormitory and share a bathroom, lounge and sometimes a kitchen. Rooms can accommodate mixed or single sex, and private rooms may also be available.Shared rooms in the Hostel can be set up as twins.

Hostels provide a budget oriented, sociable option where students can book a bed, usually a bunk bed, in a dormitory and share a bathroom, lounge and sometimes a kitchen. Rooms can accommodate mixed or single sex, and private rooms may also be available.Shared rooms in the Hostel can be set up as for 3-4 Students .
School combined with Rooms:
Since English language courses and holiday village apartments are in the same place, there is no question of wasting time on the road. You will have the opportunity to both learn the language and take advantage of holiday village facilities (such as swimming pools or fitness centers) during your free time.
ACCOMMODATION INFORMATION
• Only nationality in the room (subject to availability) €60. • Check-in on the day of arrival is at 14:00. An earlier check-in is possible at an additional fee of one night. • Check-out on the day of departure is at 10:00. A later check-out is possible at an additional fee of one night. • Private Bathroom supplement in a host family €60 per week. • Launderette available on campus: €6 wash / €4 dry. • Travel Insurance €12.50 per week (minimum two weeks). Accommodation Fees All prices are inclusive of the applicable VAT rates in Malta and any other taxes or charges. ECO TAX is not included. ECO TAX is applicable to all students aged 18 and over. €0.50 per night, capped at a maximum of €5 per visit. A refundable damage deposit of €100 will be collected from each student on arrival – this does not apply to students staying with host families. A safety deposit box can be hired at the School Reception upon request at €10.
NOTES
• Students travelling alone can book twin/triple accommodation. Students, who would like to share the same bedroom, are to send their reservations together. Whilst the school will do its utmost to accommodate such requests, these cannot be guaranteed. • The School reserves the right to allocate students in alternative accommodation of a similar or better standard (based on the value) without prior notification where circumstances beyond the school’s control necessitate such changes. • Extra nights are charged on a pro-rata basis (based on the charge for one week of accommodation); however the charge for a whole week will apply for 5 or 6 extra nights.
